one-of-a-kind calligraphy

It might be a heartfelt birthday message, song lyrics that never fail to lift your spirits, a quote that takes you right back to the far flung shores of your honeymoon, ‘I love you’ written in 50 different languages, or your mum’s best piece of advice that you want to see hanging on your kitchen wall every day.

Whatever the wording you choose, a unique, hand-painted piece of calligraphy makes the perfect gift for a loved one, or investment piece of artwork for yourself. So, how do you go from deciding what you’d like turning into a statement piece of calligraphy, to receiving your finished artwork? Follow the steps below to find out how to place your order. If you’re looking for illustrated elements alongside your calligraphy, or if you have another extra special request, please get in touch and let me know your ideas.

seven steps to building your own commission

one | choose your words

Visit the Calligraphy Shop and choose the number of words you’d like in handwritten calligraphy. This will give you the available sizes for your chosen piece. If you have a different size in mind, (and feel free to think big – I especially love creating large scale, statement pieces!) please get in touch to enquire about a custom order.

two | font styles

When you add a piece to your basket, you’ll be asked to choose between these five calligraphy styles. Will you opt for the elegant Poppy script, the more contemporary and relaxed Blossom, the romantic Magnolia, the classic Bluebell or the looping flourishes of Wild Rose?

Read more about each style in detail here.

three | a world of colour

One of the most fun bits: choosing what colour ink you’d like your piece to be painted in! I’ve hand mixed a range of 23 different hues, which you’ll be asked to choose between when you add a piece to your basket. The way I mix my colours means I’m able to create almost-exact matches to certain shades (in the past I’ve inked a piece that perfectly complemented a Farrow & Ball feature wall, and one that matched the colours in a bride’s wedding bouquet), so, if you you can’t see what you’re after on the swatches above, please don’t hesitate to enquire about a custom order.

four | final wording

When placing your order, please make sure your wording is exactly how you’d like it to appear in the final piece, down to every last comma and apostrophe. The default layout for your piece will be centred on the page, in portrait. Please let me know in your email if you would like a different orientation.

five | approval

I’ll create a digital mock up of the piece for you to check over and approve, to make sure you’re happy with the proposed layout and script style. Once this has been signed off, it’s time for me to don my painting shirt and get in the zone!

six | painting

I wish you could be a fly on the wall in my studio to watch your piece take shape. There will be a large mug of tea by my side (milk, one sugar) and very probably a selection of baked goods to keep me going. (Don’t worry – my desk remains a crumb-free zone). I’ll pop on an old favourite audio book in the background for some comforting literary company, and surround myself with colour swatches, nibs, brushes, palettes and ink. Hopefully there’ll be a shaft of sunlight coming in through the window. It’s my kind of organised chaos and it’s my favourite place to be. I’ll use your approved template to lay out each line, making sure the piece fits perfectly on the paper. Then it’s time to get totally lost in the shaping and swirling of each word.

seven | shipping

Once your piece is all finished and perfectly dry, it’s packaged up in fully recyclable packaging and shipped to you, or to the gift recipient. The whole process takes roughly two weeks from placing your order to receiving your artwork. International orders may take longer to arrive.

FAQs

Can you ship internationally?

Yes, a lot of my clients need shipping to America or Europe. You will see the shipping options at checkout. There will also be a delivery page on the website with the different options and policies.

Do your paintings come framed?

No. Frames are a very personal choice and add a lot to the finished composition. Scandi style lime washed wood will give a very different overall impact to something ornate and gilt edged. I find that people prefer to choose their own to suit the space that the painting will hang. (I also do not have enough space to keep them in stock and store them – frames are bulky critters!).

If you would like some advice on choosing and sourcing the right frame for your calligraphied artwork, I would be more than happy to help – please get in touch. If you’d like your finished piece to be shipped and delivered framed (in a frame chosen and purchased by me, in consultation with you) you will need to use the enquiry form to create a custom order.

This is a gift, can you ship directly to the recipient?

Yes, absolutely. I have gift wrapping and gift note options which can be added at checkout.

I’ve already bought a frame, can you size my piece to fit it?

Yes, as most paper is cut to size at the start of a project anyway. Please note that a specific paper size counts as a custom order, so you’ll need to use the enquiry form to submit your measurements and any other special requests you might have.

I need my order by an important date, can you do it?

I will absolutely do my best, but I can’t guarantee rush orders as all my artwork is hand painted and takes time. Get in touch and let me know what you need and when you need it, and I’ll be upfront about whether or not it’s possible. Please note that there may be additional charges involved for a ‘rush’ order.

Do you offer returns?

No, unless there is a fault with the final piece. Please contact me if you feel this is the case.

I’ve got a special idea in mind, can you do it?

I love taking on special projects and totally custom pieces that will be particularly meaningful. I often take commissions for unusual projects – whether in terms of size, colour, adornment or illustration – and encourage you to get in touch to discuss what’s possible.

I’m after a particular colour for my calligraphy piece. Do I have to select from the set range of inks available, or can you create something different for me?

I mix all my inks from watercolour pigments to create the colour I want, so I happily take commissions where I match ink to wall colours, furniture, wedding flowers, etc! It won’t be an exact match but I’ll get it as close as I can. Please use the enquiry form to let me know the colour you’re ideally looking for and I can create this for you as a custom order.
